Wem theatre group unveils £35k new extension
Monday 12th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
One of the oldest amateur theatre groups in the country is celebrating a new £35,000 community room, unveiled by Wem Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society in Aston Street.
The extension, dubbed the Green Room, was funded by a £10,000 grant from Shropshire Council, which was match-funded by donations from society members and charitable organisations in Wem.
It is the latest phase of an 11-year-project, with a toilet block, kitchen area and disabled access having been added previously.
Margaret Simmons, president of the society, said: “We have worked tirelessly to fund this extension and we are so proud of it, it has really made our headquarters a proper little theatre.
“In the past, people had to wait outside before performances started, but now we can welcome them into a lovely, red-carpeted room.
The society was formed in 1919 and stages four performances a year at the theatre, which is also used by the Stage Door Youth Theatre group.
People were asked to buy chairs, carpet tiles and raffle tickets to fund the extension, built on the car park.
About 11 years ago, the group purchased the old Apostolic Church in Aston Street. “It’s for the community as well as for us,” Margaret said.
