Olympic honour for Shropshire torchbearers
Monday 12th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Inspirational people of all ages from Shropshire have been chosen to carry the Olympic torch as part of a relay ahead of next year’s Games.
Three new torchbearers from the county were revealed today with 15-year-old Bridgnorth Endowed School pupil Jordan Clarke; Val Hanover, from the North Shropshire Special Olympics organisation; and Special Olympics gold medallist Briony Johnson, from Oswestry, all receiving conditional offers.
Bridgnorth youngster Jordan was chosen after recovering from an emergency liver transplant at the age of eight. He spent two months in hospital after the transplant in 2005 and is on medication for life, but has still managed to raise more than £10,000 for various charities.
Proud mum Zoe Clarke, of King Charles Way, Bridgnorth, said: “Jordan received notification that he is going to be a torchbearer carrying the Olympic flame in the 2012 Olympics, which he is really pleased about.
“Jordan was nominated because he has had a tough time. He has to take medication now for life but never complains. He has to have blood tests every three months and is always making an effort to fundraise.”
Miss Hanover, of Oswestry, also received her conditional offer last Thursday via a letter along with fellow town resident Miss Johnson, 21, who won gold and bronze medals in badminton competitions at the Special Olympics 2011 World Games in Athens.
Miss Hanover, 63, has been chairman of North Shropshire Special Olympics for 22 years after setting up the Special Olympics group in the area.
She said she was nominated by Sports England for a chance to carry the iconic flame.
“It is an honour for me to get the letter,” she said.
