Jobs boost at Cobra as Vauxhall deal sealed
Monday 12th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
A car parts company based in Shropshire and Mid Wales has secured a £12 million contract with Vauxhall Motors, which will see it create almost 50 new jobs.
Vehicle parts producer Cobra UK, based in Welshpool and Whitchurch, has won the lucrative deal which will see it start production on a new automatically retracting boot cover for the new Astra car.
Bosses today said the contract would secure the future of the current workforce in both towns, while also creating 49 new positions within the company.
Gary Seale, managing director of Cobra, said he was delighted the contract had been secured.
He said: “We have built on our growing relationship with Vauxhall to ensure this fantastic deal.
“The news that the contract is now secure guarantees current jobs, creates more employment opportunities and means that the company’s expansion plan is right on track.
“We have proved we consistently produce the high qualities required by the European automotive industry and this is a real boost for Wales as a whole.
“It is particularly good news that Vauxhall is actively seeking to source supplies from the UK and have recognised Cobra as a major supplier.”
Earlier this year Cobra, which has its head office on Welshpool’s Buttington Cross Enterprise Park, won the Queen’s Award for Industry in the International Trade category.
Cobra’s Automotive Products Division currently employs 49 people and manufactures interior car parts for some of the world’s leading motor manufacturers including Bentley, Volvo, Audi as well as Vauxhall owned General Motors.
It also employs 72 people in Whitchurch and the latest news secures the future of the company further after it lost 90 per cent of its sales following the MG Rover collapse in 2005.
