High winds and heavy rain to batter Shropshire
Monday 12th December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Heavy rain and gale force winds of up to 60 mph will batter Shropshire from tonight, forecasters have warned.
The county is expected to be hit by a series of storms from tonight with wind speeds reaching up to 60mph by Friday. The Met Office today issued yellow warnings.
This level of warning indicates strong winds and heavy rain for most of England, with the south-east expected to be hit hardest.
Forecasters said there would also be heavy downpours starting today which would continue until the weekend when it will eventually ease to be replaced by sunny intervals.
Claire Allen, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said there was ‘a lot of uncertainty’ about the rest of the week.
“There will be sunny spells and scattered showers today, but it will be very wet and windy overnight,” she added.
“We are expecting gusts of us to 65mph in England and western areas of Wales. There’s also a band of rain coming through and some heavy bursts are expected.
“Tomorrow there’s a depression moving across. We are seeing gusts of about 98mph in north-west Scotland from the afternoon onwards. The rest of the country will be windy too.”
Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said: “The gritters were out this morning at about 5am and we will continue monitoring the situation. We would advise motorists to take care.”
