More than 100 motorcyclists took Christmas presents to children at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and helped raise cash for charity as part of an annual toy run.

About 130 bikers met in The Square in Shrewsbury on Saturday for the toy run before transporting the presents to the hospital.

The event, organised by the MCC Rainbringers, also raised £1,000 for Severndale Specialist School in the town and special needs charity Bradbury House.

Andy Evans, a spokesman for the organisers, said the toy run had gone extremely well despite the wet weather.

He said: “It went extremely well and we were very pleased with the turnout considering the weather and the fact that there were toy runs taking place in Stoke and Chester at the same time.”

Throughout the event which took place between 10am and 2pm, Shrewsbury rock band Stiff Witness entertained the crowds while bikers took it in turns to ride up to the hospital in groups.

Mr Evans said: “On behalf of the club I would like to thank the generosity of the people on the streets who turned out to support the event.”

This year’s event was smaller than last year’s which saw about 450 bikers take to the streets of Shrewsbury to deliver presents to the hospital.

There were initial fears that the event could be cancelled due to a lack of police stewarding but the issues were resolved and, despite less bikers taking part this year, organisers said that the amount of presents taken to the hospital remained the same.

Well done – especially for braving the rain! Hope next year the full run will be back on track, it really is a sight to see (and a sound to hear!), very exciting. As soon as a date is chosen for next year, make sure everyone knows, it should be a bumper event. Congratulations.
