First look at Princess Royal Hospital’s future

Here are the first images of the multi-million pound women and children’s unit planned for Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.

The £28 million centre, which is due to open in 2014, is the centrepiece of plans for the future of NHS care in Shropshire.

It will offer a range of services including looking after women who are expecting twins or whose babies are premature, children who need to stay in hospital overnight and gynaecology and breast services where the patients need an overnight stay.

The centre will also be the home of children’s cancer and haematology services, which will be based and all head and neck surgery and children’s surgery involving an overnight stay and a 24-hour children’s assessment unit .

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust says accident and emergency and outpatient services will remain the same, and most people will continue to attend the same hospital as they do presently.

The trust will submit a planning application for the development in the new year. If successful, work will start on the building next spring.

Adam Cairns, trust chief executive, said: “We are committed to providing the very best local hospital services in the future and are very excited about our plans for a new women and children’s unit at the Princess Royal Hospital.”

The trust is inviting people to see and comment on the plans at two drop-in sessions from 10am and 12pm on Tuesday and from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday.

Both sessions will be held in the Lecture Theatre in the Education Centre at PRH.
