Road contract to save Shropshire £600,000 bill
Thursday 8th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Shropshire Council’s pioneering new arrangement for maintaining the county’s roads by using a new contractor will save taxpayers £600,000 every year, it was claimed today.
The authority and neighbouring Cheshire West and Cheshire Council this week confirmed that Ringway Infrastructure Services Ltd will look after both counties’ roads from April 1.
The contract will cover all aspects of highway maintenance, highway improvement, gully emptying, grass cutting, bridge repair and maintenance, and street lighting.
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member, said: “By working together with Cheshire West and Chester Council to share expertise and resources, this new contract presents us with a potential additional saving of around £700,000 per year between the two councils (on top of the £600,000 saved by us as a result of retendering the contract).
“This means that it will provide excellent value for money for Shropshire residents.
“The tender assessment has been thorough and the contract has been awarded to the company which submitted the best bid both in terms of price and quality.”
Ringway was selected as the preferred bidder from a shortlist of five at the council’s Cabinet meeting last month, and the deal was confirmed this week.
Highways in Shropshire have been maintained by Enterprise Plc, for the past 10 years. Shropshire Council said staff will transfer to the new provider on their current terms and conditions of employment.
There is an option to extend the six year contract for a further four years, subject to the contractor’s performance.
