Letter: Why can’t everyone be on the state pension?
Thursday 8th December 2011, 8:43AM GMT.
In the news a teacher was complaining about having to work until she was 68.
I was educated from 1937 until 1946. My secondary school maths teacher was brought out of retirement to teach us, as were many more. I left school at 14 and got my retirement pension at 65. That is a total of 51 years’ work.
Most teachers don’t leave school now until they are 18. They then either go to university or teacher training college for two years so they start work at 20. They therefore only work for 48 years, even if they work until they are 68.
I only receive the state pension which I have to manage on so why can’t everyone be on the state pension and the money saved could maybe raise our pension a little.
