Family to sue over paracetamol overdose death of pensioner
Thursday 8th December 2011, 11:05AM GMT.
The family of a 68-year-old pensioner who died from a paracetamol overdose three weeks after being admitted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with a fractured hip today said they would be pursuing a civil claim against the trust.
The relatives of Margaret Cynthia Shearer, known as Cynthia, said they were ‘shocked’ by the failures of the doctors and nurses responsible for her care.
Mrs Shearer, of Oswestry, died from multiple organ failure three weeks after being admitted to hospital.
At an inquest in Wem yesterday coroner John Ellery ruled that she died from a paracetamol overdose. The inquest heard Mrs Shearer weighed 36 kilograms but was given a dosage for someone 14 kilograms heavier.
A statement from solicitor Kay Kelly, of Lanyon Bowdler on behalf of the family said today: “The family will be pursuing a civil claim against the trust.
“The family have welcomed the very thorough investigation of the coroner into Cynthia’s death but they are shocked by the circumstances.”
