A large piece of antique porcelain has stumped police officers after it was left beside a main road in Shropshire.

The Capodimonte jug or pitcher is likely to be a collectors’ item and may be of considerable value, police say.

It was handed in to Shrewsbury police station by a passerby who spotted it beside the A458 Shrewsbury to Bridgnorth road near Harley Bank on Saturday. Its exact value is not known.

Richard Ewels, a West Mercia Police spokesman, said: “It is something of a mystery but the most likely explanation is that it’s been stolen either from someone’s home or from a property showroom.”

The distinctive looking white jug is about 15ins tall and is highly decorative with what appears to be a fish’s head at the end of the pouring spout.

The one side and the handle are patterned, but otherwise without decoration, while the other side has a multi-coloured pattern and display.

Mr Ewels added: “We are hoping the piece, which may have considerable sentimental value, can be reunited with its owner.”

It can be claimed by contacting the property office at Shrewsbury police station by calling the non-emergency 101 number.
