CSI methods snare hotel bill pair

Sasha Rocke and Matthew Clinton were tracked

Detectives used CSI-style DNA testing to track down a couple from Shropshire who ran off from an Aberystwyth bed and breakfast without paying the £130 bill.

Mother-of-one Sasha Rocke, 20, and her boyfriend Matthew Clinton, 26, from Caradoc View, in Hanwood, failed to pay for their stay at Helmsman Guest House in Aberystwyth after a benefits cheque did not appear in their bank account.

Specialists were called in to the seaside bed and breakfast to take a DNA profile of hair, skin and fibres from an overnight bag.

A swab from the luggage matched a profile that police had of Rocke and detectives were able to track down the couple to their home 75 miles away in Hanwood, near Shrewsbury.

Rocke and Clinton both pleaded guilty to theft in their absence at Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court on November 23 and were ordered to pay back the three-star guest house as well as £85 in costs.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that the cost of the DNA profiling was more than the cost of the hotel bill, but would not give a figure.

A spokesman for the force said that the technique was a valuable crime-fighting tool to track down petty criminals as well as catch the more serious offenders.

She said: “Police will use all available scientific means, including DNA testing, to support investigations and to identify offenders.”

Consultant forensic scientist Nigel Hodge said after the case: “These crimes do happen – unfortunately people occasionally do runners.

“Talk to anyone who works in a petrol station and they’ll tell you that people sometimes fill up and drive off.

“Cost is an issue. Is it worth spending all that money for a crime which perhaps involved the theft of £50? But police also have to take into consideration their obligation to investigate offences, and the impact of crimes on victims. DNA profiling has also been shown to act as a deterrent.”

“Perhaps we have to let people know they cannot get away with these things.”

No-one was available to comment at the guest house.

You cant condone this couples action however they need not have run off, but simply left proof of name and address and paid at a later date. The cost of police man power clearly has to be questioned on this one .

However all said and done we all have a guilty pleasure and mine is to view the website of the Daily mail some of the comments left about this story by the dumb and dumber are hilarious .To think i used to see that paper in the staff room of a local education establishment, all makes you think.

I don’t think it does. A crime was committed and solved. That’s what the Police do.

I’m going to indulge myself in your guilty pleasure now and count the number of times “flogged” and “birch” appear in the DM comments.

Ludicrous cost it may be but surely only those whose tax supports the The Dyfed/Powis police have a reason to complain..Had the incident occured anywhere within its area, The West Mercia police who are incapable of preventing or solving anything would just have pleaded for witnesses or information. ZERO COST !!!

Possibly victims of the fast evaporating work ethic in this country but honestly the more ‘reality’ TV this generation watches the further away from reality they are becoming. The article states they left without paying the £130 bill – there is no mention of how many nights that £130 covered. I dont need sophisticated DNA techniques to draw the conclusion that for a 3 star B&B in Aberystwyth that would not be the price for a single night. Think before you post people.

And the sub headline should be “And the magistrates let them off as usual” . Being made to pay the bill, just like normal, people have to do, is not punishment. These people are criminals. If the police put all this effort into catching them then they should be dealt with severely out of respect for the vast majority who live decent lives and have to pick up the bill for such vermin.

Having just got this far down the list of comments, and passed the usual amount of ‘it’s all the police’s fault’ and ‘what a waste of their time’ type comments I get here – the first person to hit the nail right on the head !!

The police investigate the crime, provide the evidence (the means are irrelevant to an extent) the the court system does not deal appropriately. It may deal within the guidelines it is given for sentencing but as this example shows it is the Justice system that is wrong not the police.

Where is the penalty for the crime ??? where is the deterrent to others ??? All they have had to do is pay the outstanding bill and a standard contribution towards court costs.

There is no punishment for wrongdoing here (am I allowed to use the ‘P’ word ???); there is no restoration to the victim, undoubtedly a hard working tax paying member of society who is trying to eek out a living in these hard times; and indeed why should the criminal not be made to provide restoration to the rest of us who’s taxes are used to pay for policing.

Just remember Rudy Giuliani, the New York mayors zero tolerance approach to minor and petty crime – deal strongly and immediately with that and more serious crime dropped dramatically as a result – put the fear back with the criminals not the victims …

Dyfed Powys police have a very low crime rate in comparison to their budget. They can afford to investigate crimes such as this. Can’t help wondering why they did not check the name and address on the registration card before going down the DNA route.

As with all police forces if they spend less than their allocated budget they have the budget reduced for the following year. Explains why there is a sudden burst of expependiture towards the end of a financial year on trivia.

I had a job as a waitress when I was a student. When people did a runner it was we, who were paid peanuts, who had to foot the bill.

From time to time I’ve found myself in a petrol station or restaurant without my wallet and have left a piece of jewellery as ‘honest money’ and returned to pay within the hour.

This kind of behaviour is so low.

I don’t think that benefit is relevant to this debate. Whatever their source of income these people committed an offence.

I can’t understand the psychology of the behaviour. How can a holiday be enjoyed when you know you are going to do something dangerous at the end of it.

Perhaps i see the good in people , I am under the impression they did intend to pay but the funds failed to arrive in the bank which resulted in them making the wrong decision . They needed only to leave name and address and proof of this would then have been a civil matter not a criminal matter.

Has anyone thought to consider that the fact that the police were willing to go to such costly lengths to catch these two ne’erdowells might make likeminded miscreants think twice before doing a runner?

My regret about the outcome is the paltry fine, a simple means test and visit from the bailiffs bailif would suffice to deprive them of some of their considered luxury items, add to that, seeing as the male of the species involved has previous, a custodial sentence for him, along with repaying the hotel and the court costs.

The liberals will tell you that stiff sentencing does not work, but it’s quite apparent that leniency only feeds the beast.
