Robbers attack pensioner outside Shrewsbury flats

A pensioner was left frightened and shaken after he was attacked and grabbed round the throat in an attempted robbery outside a block of flats in Shrewsbury, police said today.

The 74-year-old man was attacked in the dark outside the Coton Manor flats on Berwick Road.

He was wrestled from behind during the incident, grabbed by the throat and had his arm twisted up behind his back.

The offender demanded money from the victim but then fled empty handed after the two male attackers lost their balance and fell into some shrubs.

Police said the pensioner was shaken but unhurt in the attempted robbery, which happened between 6.30pm and 7.40pm on Friday.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident or anyone who might have seen the victim being followed by the men along Coton Hill Road to come forward to help inquiries.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “This was a frightening experience for an elderly man attacked from behind as he made his way home in the dark.

“He was badly shaken but fortunately was not injured and we are anxious to receive any information which may help us trace the person responsible,” added Mr Ewels.

Any information can be phoned to Shrewsbury CID on the 101 non emergency number.

Information about the attempted robbery can also be passed to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111.
