Is this Shropshire’s longest serving Santa Claus? Ray Hulse is in his 49th year of donning the red suit. He was just 18 when he first entertained children as Father Christmas.

Now at the age of 67 he is preparing for yet another busy festive season.

Mr Hulse, of Well Meadow, Bridgnorth, is hoping to raise £4,000 in donations from his appearances in the big red suit.

This year he has chosen Hope House Children’s Hospice as his charity but has raised money previously for Church of England Waifs and Strays, Bridgnorth Ambulance and Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton.

The father-of-three said: “I do it to raise funds for terminally ill children. It’s to see the way the children respond and just to see their smiles on their faces.”

He used to have a shop-bought outfit but now has a custom-made one. He said: “Some children come with great expectations, wanting everything. What Santa never does is say he will definitely bring it.”
