Closing Telford information point will save £22,000 a year

Closing a local information point in Telford is likely to save the borough council £22,000 a year.

Telford & Wrekin Council aims to save the cash by closing its one-stop First Point information centre in Hadley at Christmas. The closure will also help make way for the regeneration of Hadley centre. Councillor Richard Overton, said: “It is essential that as a council we review all of the services we offer.

Councillor Overton, council cabinet member for borough town development and policy, continued: “We must identify any potential savings that will contribute towards the £40 million that Government stipulate we must save by 2014.

“Closing First Point Hadley will provide a further saving while ensuring services that were offered remain available to the public.”

Councillor John Smart, the chairman of Hadley & Leegomery Parish Council, said the parish did not formally object to the closure because it was seen as an inevitability, but he was sad to see the service close.

He said: “It’s another service that Hadley has lost. We did lose the library from the centre two or three years ago and this is yet another service that’s been taken away from us by the borough.”

Councillor Smart added the parish council supported plans for the redevelopment of Hadley centre, but was disappointed it was now going to be done in phases.

“Under the last administration we were going to get the whole lot but now it’s just phase one, the shops, with phase two hopefully in 2015,” he added.

The decision was taken as the number of customers using it is relatively low. Consultation did not show a strong demand for the service to stay in Hadley, from residents or the parish council, with other services and facilities preferred for the new development.

First Point in Hadley is run on a rota basis. There will be no job losses when it closes on December 23.
