A man in his 20s has died after being hit by a train near Oswestry.

Police said the man was confirmed dead at the scene in Weston Rhyn at about 2pm yesterday. The crash sparked rail delays between Chester and Shrewsbury for several hours and led to the closure of Station Road in the village between Gledrid roundabout and the Old Chirk Road junction for about three hours.

Officers said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Inspector Simon Lewis of West Mercia Police said: “A train had to stop and there were no vehicles involved but a pedestrian was involved. The level crossing and the road had to close for a little while.”

He added the deceased was a white man in his 20s.

British Transport Police said: “At 2pm yesterday a report was received from a member of Network Rail staff that a person had been struck by a train at Station Road, Weston Rhyn, Oswestry, Shropshire.”
