Harper Adams University aim to extend student bar

Shropshire’s only university has applied to extend its bar – to enhance the ‘student experience’ saying it had changed its priorities as a result of the increase in student fees.
Harper Adams University College in Edgmond, near Newport, said the application is for a 25per cent increase to the campus bar.
The planning application says: “The existing Students’ Union bar is a large, dedicated building, surrounded by teaching and students’ residential accommodation.
“With the imminent changes to Higher Education funding arrangements imposed by the Government leading to increased fees payable by new students from 2012, the emphasis of development projects has shifted to improving the ‘student experience’ in order to support recruitment levels and safeguard employment.
“There is no proposed change of use, the proposal is purely an extension of the existing bar and event area, which has become inadequate due to increased student numbers on the campus.”
The plans are for an extension to the back of the current building with a new ‘chill-out bar’ and a paved patio outside.
The existing porch would be removed and replaced with a new glass porch.
The application says: “This will provide a more contemporary external appearance, looking out onto the open space between new teaching and residential blocks to the north and west of the building.”
The plan is linked to another application for new halls of residence accommodation. The application says the extension will have acoustic windows and motorised roller shutters to reduce the noise.
