Yobs hurled concrete blocks from a bridge in Shrewsbury sending debris crashing onto a road below.

Bits of concrete were discovered strewn across the carriageway in Robertson Way, Monkmoor, yesterday morning. Police are now hunting the vandals who they say could have killed or seriously injured passing motorists. The blocks were thrown onto the road from the bridge in Monkmoor Road shortly after 2am.

Six police officers attended the scene after two drivers dialled 999.

The culprits had fled but debris was discovered on the road below the bridge.

Inspector Emma Wright, from West Mercia Police, said there was, as yet, no indication of how many people were involved.

“Some debris was found on the carriageway but nobody was located. We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward,” she said.

She said the incident was a very serious one, which could have had potentially life-threatening consequences.

Inspector Wright said police received two calls at about 2.15am, both believed to be from drivers who had been travelling close to the scene.

No-one was found on the bridge and despite officers conducting a search of the local area, the culprits were not tracked down.

It is believed no-one was hurt as a result of the incident and no damage was caused.

The incident comes after a woman motorist had a miracle escape after her windscreen was smashed by a stone block dropped from the top of a bridge in Essex.

The 26-year-old and her 48-year-old mother escaped unharmed after their Vauxhall Astra was targeted under the Fryerning Lane Bridge near Ingatestone last Thursday.

Forty minutes after the incident, a 57-year-old woman was left with fractures to her face and ribs and internal injuries when a ‘bucket-sized’ piece of concrete was dropped onto her vehicle from a different bridge on the same stretch of road between Chelmsford and London.

Police are treating both incidents as attempted murder.
