MP Owen Paterson presents Youth European Modern Pentathlon Champion and Thomas Adams School student Joe Evans with a medal
Sixth former Joe Evans has been presented with a medal by a county MP after he flew the flag for Shropshire on the international sporting stage.
North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson visited Joe, who is studying for A-levels at Adams College in Wem, during a day of appointments in the constituency on Friday.
Mr Paterson met Joe after he won the gold medal at the Youth European Championships for Modern Pentathlon in Hungary this summer.
Mr Paterson said he was impressed with Joe’s sporting success, which has been achieved amidst a busy college schedule.
Mr Paterson said: “Perhaps no-one has had a busier summer than Joe who won the gold medal at the Youth European Championships for Modern Pentathlon in Hungary.
“Joe had to fence, swim 200m and run 3,000m while shooting down 15 targets in order to secure victory. He came second overall in the fencing, second in the swimming and in the combined running and shooting event crossed the finish line first to make him Youth European Champion for 2011: a magnificent achievement.
“To reach such a high standard, Joe has to train very hard. He rides, he swims with Whitchurch Wasps and fences with Wrekin Sword. He has to balance this huge commitment with his A-level studies.
“Following the European championships, Joe moved on to the World Championships and came in fifth while then going on to win the British Pentathlon. What a remarkable summer.”
Friday’s visit also saw Mr Paterson tour the school with headteacher Neil Hemming and visit Hawkstone Park, where he addressed the Wem & District Rotary Club at their annual lunch.
