Pensioner, 80, rescued from the River Severn

A woman in her 80s is recovering in hospital after she was rescued from the River Severn.

The woman was spotted in difficulty in the water close to the steps leading to the Dana, Castlefields, at about 5.45pm yesterday and was rescued by fire service personnel using the brigade’s boat.

She was given immediate first aid at the scene and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said today her condition appears to be stable. And passersby have been thanked for the role they played in helping to save the woman.

Inspector Gurjit Singh, of West Mercia Police, said: “We were called by the ambulance service who had received a call from a member of the public that a woman was face up in the water. There was a combined rescue effort between emergency services.

“We still don’t know the exact circumstances of how the lady came to be in the water as we have not been able to talk to her.”
Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.
