A49 fireball accident driver named

Victim - Jeff Blundell
Victim - Jeff Blundell

A man in his 50s who died in a crash in north Shropshire was today named locally as Jeff Blundell.

Mr Blundell is believed to have been the driver of a car which collided with a lorry on the A49 just north of Preston Brockhurst, near Wem, on Tuesday.

Police have yet to officially confirm the name of the victim, but said a post mortem was being held today.

Mr Blundell was the co-owner of the Fox and Hounds Pub in Shawbury, which reopened in 2009 following a £1 million facelift.

Tuesday’s incident left the road closed between Prees Heath, near Whitchurch, and Shrewsbury for most of the day.

It took 25 firefighters about two hours to tackle the fire after the car and lorry burst into flames.

It led to Barbara Rainford, who lives by the A49 near Prees, to renew calls for urgent action to be taken to slash the number of deaths on the road.

She claims it is the sixth fatal accident in 19 years on the A49 in north Shropshire.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision or events leading up to it to call Shrewsbury police on 101.

Leave your tributes for Jeff Blundell below.
