Second bid for 100 Broseley homes rejected

Councillors have thrown out plans for more than 100 homes in Broseley for a second time.

The application by Bloor Homes for 107 homes on land off Dark Lane was brought back before Shropshire Council planners after officers warned members’ that their grounds for rejecting the plans, which included traffic concerns and site safety might not stand up at an appeal.

Officers warned the arguments against excess traffic and land instability may not be valid as the land had previously been designated as a site for homes under the Local Plan.

They warned it could leave the council having to pay costs if an ultimately successful appeal were lodged.

A report to the planning committee in November recommended the plans be approved but the councillors rejected it, claiming the design was inappropriate for the adjoining conservation area and historic town centre, the living conditions would be cramped, there had been a lack of investigation of ground stability and the existing roads were not sufficient to take the extra traffic which would be generated

During yesterday’s planning meeting held in Bridgnorth, chief planning officer Stuart Thomas said: “We will have a much greater chance of success if we refuse in respect of design and density.

“We are not seeking to reopen the debate, we are seeking some guidance from members about why the scheme was rejected.”

Councillor Robert Tindall said: “We have a duty to give people more room in their homes and surrounding their homes, not squash them in.

“It would be appalling if this committee now supported this application.”

Councillor Milner Whiteman said: “I think we have to respect the view of the people of Broseley.

“I can understand officers concerns about it but there are clear reasons for objecting to this application,” he said.

Councillor Madge Shineton said the size of the houses were unsustainable in the long term.

“These two bedroom houses are the next generation’s slums, without a doubt,” she said.
