Hundreds of friends sign tragic Newport man’s tribute page

Tuesday 29th November 2011, 7:00PM GMT.

Hundreds of friends and wellwishers have signed up to a Facebook tribute page paying tribute to a 19-year-old who collapsed and died in Newport.

Sam Docherty has been described as a ‘popular’ and ‘colourful’ character by staff at the town’s Burton Borough School, where he studied.

Friends have laid flowers at Shuker Field in Newport, close to the school, and almost 700 people have signed up to the Facebook page.

Mr Docherty died at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital after being found in a poorly condition at a house in Broadway on Friday evening.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Docherty’s death, which is being treated as ‘unexplained’.

Dave Hill, headteacher at Burton Borough School, said: “Sam was a colourful character who was well known throughout the school when he was here and was popular with his classmates. He was also an outstanding all round athlete and a particularly brilliant sprinter.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Denise Wakefield, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “His family were with him when he passed away.

“Formal identification and a post-mortem investigation are due to take place later in the week. At this present time the man’s death is being treated as unexplained.”

Anyone with information can call Telford Police on 101.
