Telford and Shrewsbury hospitals in 19 worst for deaths in UK
Monday 28th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Shropshire’s two main hospitals are among the 19 worst in the country for high patient death rates, new research has revealed today.
The number of deaths at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is classified as ‘bad’, according to a survey carried out by researchers at Dr Foster Intelligence.
The trust runs both the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Hospital bosses today said death rates had improved over the last 12 months and more action was still being taken to bring them down further.
The Dr Foster researchers used a range of methods to assess how many deaths occurred at an acute trust compared to how many were predicted.
Based on this research, for every 100 deaths expected, the Shropshire hospitals are seeing 114.8.
This puts the trust among the 19 worst in the country for high mortality rates.
But the trust says it has taken action and the figure has come down to 102 deaths for every 100 expected.
Dr Ashley Fraser, medical director of The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “Whilst today’s Dr Foster Guide shows that the trust’s hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) is continuing to improve, it is still above national averages. We have taken action and we continue to take action to address this.
“We have taken action to increase the quality of care.”

Given the changes that are currently being pushed through over the area’s hospital provision it would be useful to be given the breakdown of statistics between Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals in stories like this one. The reorganisation will give the two hospitals responsibility for different services for the whole area and many people (including me) are still very concerned that this is not a good idea. A breakdown of the figures would be much more informative than including them all together.

Perhaps instead of mucking around with hospital sites closing maternity etc and moving depts from one site to the other. The money earmarked for this could well be spent on improving what we have got.!!!! Just a thought.

One has to wonder how much management time and effort, never mind money, has been spent dealing with the often mis-informed campaigns against the re-organisation of services.
Time and money which could have gone into better organisation, better patient care and more staff.
Maybe the blame for these sad statistics should be laid at the doors of opportunistic politicians who encouraged emotion in the face of medical, practical and financial inevitability – just to grab headlines.

This is not inspiring news.
However, by going to the Dr. Foster website I see that the report is true.
