A man was killed in a hit and run incident in Shropshire today.

Police issued an appeal for witnesses as they hunt the driver of the car following the incident, which happened just after 4am in Venus Bank in Cound, near Shrewsbury.

Claire Thomas, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said the man had died at the scene of the crash.

Michelle Bennett, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “We are appealing for witnesses to a serious road traffic collision between 4am and 4.20am. We received a call at about 4.18am.”

She said the accident happened near the Riverside Inn at Venus Bank.

She added: “It was a non-stop road traffic collision involving one vehicle and a pedestrian. We can confirm we have a deceased man. Next of kin will be informed today.”

She said no further details about the man will be made public until his family have been informed about his death.

Following the incident, the A458 Wenlock Road was closed in both directions between Weeping Cross Island in Shrewsbury and the Shore Lane junction in Cressage, with traffic being diverted.

The road was expected to reopen this afternoon after officials from the Highways Agency have cleared the scene.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101.
