Public sector strikes set to shut schools across Shropshire
Friday 25th November 2011, 10:00AM GMT.
The full impact on Shropshire of next week’s public sector strikes was beginning to emerge today, with dozens of schools in the county set to close.
About 25 schools in Telford & Wrekin and 19 in Shropshire will be shut when public sector walkers walk out on Wednesday as part of a national strike over pensions reform.
Shropshire Council boss Kim Ryley said the strikes would be the worst in the county for 30 years. In Shropshire there will be 40 partial school closures as 144 teachers and 33 support staff join the strike. The authority is still waiting to hear from a further 90.
Nigel Newman, spokes-man for Telford & Wrekin Council, said today: “To help keep people up to date with any services that will be affected, the council will post information to www.telford.gov.uk/nationalstrike as well as its Facebook and Twitter pages.”
David Taylor, Shropshire Council’s director of people’s services, said: “We are currently working with county trade union representatives and schools to look at the potential impact, and work to minimise the disruption caused by any planned industrial action.”
Bin collections in Shropshire will be unaffected.
Telford and Shrewsbury hospitals have cancelled appointments and staff have been asked not to take any leave. Ambulance workers will also be taking part in the walkout.
Ray Salmon, Unison’s regional organiser, said contingency plans were in place to maintain essential services.

They are a disgrace, they are already well paid and receive a better than the norm pension when campared to the private sector. They should just shut up and put up, going on strike with greed as the motivation is no example to set to children. With over 2.5 million unemployed there must be pleanty of qualified people willing to step in and do the jobs,

Stop moaning get back to work and be lucy you have a job!
There are many of people who would gladly do your jobs without a winge and a moan because their pensions are being cut….
Get over it, you took the risk by working in the public sector in the first place, if you don’t like it then don’t do it.
Bringing the country to a stanbd still will not solve anything and many many people will be angry with you strikers for doing so.
Do us all a favour and shut up and get on with your jobs. The rest of the public don’t care and you or your pensions.
Rant over dot com!

I’ve worked in both the private sector and the public sector and do you know, here’s a funny thing, I’ve met people like Ian and Darren in both.
Now is’nt it time you both clocked back in, you’ve still got 12 hours of your shift to finish!.
