More Shropshire women report domestic abuse incidents
Friday 25th November 2011, 7:00PM GMT.
More than 1,700 domestic abuse incidents have been reported across Shropshire so far this year, police have revealed, a rise of about 100 more than in the same period during 2010.
Women in Shropshire subjected to domestic violence and abuse are being urged to contact the police, who will look at cases as a top priority.
Sergeant Samantha Hammond, from the Domestic Abuse Unit at Shrewsbury police station, said: “Women should not suffer in silence.
“The investigation of domestic abuse is a top priority for West Mercia Police. Victims can come to us in confidence knowing we will deal with their issues in a sensitive and positive manner”.
Her plea is timed to coincide with the nationwide White Ribbon Campaign, which is running between today and December 10 and is designed to campaign against domestic violence.
Sergeant Hammond said: “Our message is quite simple – do not hold back.
“Women need not suffer abuse and we wont let you down. We have specially trained officers whose sole aim is to help by stopping the abuse and preventing it happening again.”
She added that the number of complaints about domestic abuse had increased, which she said was an indication more people were coming forward to contact the police for help.
Sergeant Hammond said the issue was a nationwide problem, with one in four women experiencing abuse and two women killed in the UK every week as a result of it. These are shocking statistics, and even more so when they reveal that 40 per cent of all murders are domestic abuse related.
“It takes on average 35 incidents before a woman reports abuse which is a frightening situation.”
