Blind Great Danes separated after attack

A blind Great Dane has been separated from her guide dog after attacking her in the pair’s new home. The pair of dogs – six-year-old Lily, who lost her eyes to an incurable condition at just 18 months old, and Maddison – were left at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury in Roden in July when their owners could no longer cope.

An appeal led to the centre taking more than 400 calls and the dogs eventually being passed on to new owners Anne and Len Williams, from Nantwich, Cheshire in October.

But Lily has now been taken back by staff at the Dogs Trust.

In a statement on the Dogs Trust website, head of training Lynn Barber said: “The aggressive reaction Lily had towards Maddison in her new home is almost certainly because she is blind.

“Sadly for Lily moving to another home proved extremely stressful. For the safety of the dogs Lily and Maddison will be rehomed separately.”

I know alot of people have mixed feelings about these dogs but having seen Maddison with her new owners she is extremely happy. Watching Lily out on a walk last weekend she had not a care in the world she really doesnt act like a dog without sight. The origonal situation these dogs were in made for a great fairytale story but obviosly not right for either of these dogs. We cant always live the fairytale. Good luck to Lily when she finds her perfect home.

Its very sad and with knowing Gt Danes (even a deaf one), I can not understand why she attacked her now after all this time. Ive moved while having Gt Danes and it seems to make them closer not the opposite and I would have thought with being blind it would be more so. Good luck to both Lily and Maddison for the rest of their lives, live happy, be happy. xx

Very sad. I had hoped that she had found a good home. Where she is now, she will not be alone.
