Final preparations are being made for Shrewsbury’s annual beer festival, which is expected to draw in hundreds of punters from far and wide.

The 21st Camra Shrewsbury Beer Festival will make a splash in the town when it opens to the public tomorrow from midday until 11pm under extended opening hours at its new Morris Hall venue.

The two-day festival, featuring 39 different beers including 14 from Shropshire brewers, will then run between midday and 9.30pm on Saturday.

This week a team of 20 volunteers have been putting finishing touches to the event which involved some travelling down to St Albans to collect a range of equipment.

Robin Felton, spokesman for the event, said: “Preparations have been going pretty well and we’ve been here since Monday setting up. It takes quite a lot of work which is why we’ve got a fairly large team of volunteers helping out.

“I would absolutely urge people to come along and we are hoping for good numbers.

“We’ve been advertising quite widely which has helped and I’ve been in charge of our Facebook and Twitter accounts and we’re getting quite a lot of positive feedback on there.”

Today a trade hour for publicans across the town will be held between 4pm and 5pm, as is tradition each year, and then the annual judging competition will crown one Shropshire brewer the 2011 champion ahead of the festival.
