Thousands of people poured into the heart of Shrewsbury as the town officially began the run-up to Christmas with a packed programme of events.

While there was no official Christmas light switch-on ceremony, there was plenty to keep the crowds entertained last night as brass bands, school choirs and Victorian-style singers performed in different parts of the town centre.

Among the highlights of the ‘Christmas Cracker’ evening was a ‘flash mob’ choir which performed in the Darwin Centre.

About 80 singers surprised the crowds at 6pm as they appeared on all three levels of the shopping centre and moved up and down escalators to perform Mozart’s Friends, Forget The Cares That Bore Us.

Meanwhile Christmas also arrived in Oswestry yesterday as the town’s festive lights were switched on.

Children sang carols and shoppers gathered to help with the official countdown in Festival Square during the afternoon.
