MP pledges to help stop Ludlow HSBC branch closing
Wednesday 23rd November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
An MP has pledged to help save a branch of HSBC in south Shropshire which is due to close next year. Ludlow MP Philip Dunne said today he had requested a meeting with HSBC bosses.
He wants them to reconsider a decision to close the Craven Arms branch.
It comes days after bosses announced they would be closing the bank on February 10 because it was no longer viable to keep the service open.
Bank officials said two members of staff who man the branch would transfer to other branches.
But businesses say without the bank they will be forced to travel miles out of the town to deposit money and have called for the decision to be reconsidered.
Mr Dunne said: “I was very disappointed to learn that it is slated for closure and am contacting HSBC to seek a meeting to discuss whether this decision can be reversed.
“Shropshire market towns need to maintain essential services, including banking, to allow other businesses to flourish.
I am particularly concerned about maintaining night safe deposit facilities for business customers and cash dispensing ATMs for individuals in Craven Arms.”
Mr Dunne said he had written to Roy Lewis, HSBC’s regional manager for the Midlands at HSBC in Birmingham.
Mark Hemingway, HSBC spokesman, said the decision to close had not been an easy one to make.
“We do need to ensure that they are in the right locations for our customers and on occasions this means that we need to close a branch where customer footfall has fallen dramatically or there has been a shift in customer shopping patterns,” he said.
