Move to slash Shrewsbury speed limits to 20mph

Speed limits on roads in Shrewsbury town centre could be slashed to 20mph, it has been revealed. Shropshire Council is consulting on plans to include 17 roads in mandatory 20mph zones.

The roads, which currently have a 30mph limit, include Bellstone, Barker Street and a section of Bridge Street.

Claremont Bank, Claremont Hill and Claremont Street are roads also in line to receive the lower 20mph limit, along with Colehall, Hills Lane, Lower Claremont Bank, Mardol, Priory Road, and part of Raven Meadows.

Roushill, Roushill Bank, St Austin’s Friars, St Austin’s Street, Victoria Quay and a section of Victoria Avenue between Priory Road and the Morris building could also have new 20mph limits.

Councillor Andrew Wagner, town councillor for the Quarry and Coton Hill ward, welcomed the proposals.

He said: “I’m all for this. People shouldn’t be driving fast in the town centre.

“The former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council brought in some 20mph speed limits in the town a few years ago to stop boy racers and that seems to have calmed down now.”

Consultation on the plans ends tomorrow.

Full details of the proposals can be viewed during usual office opening hours at the Shirehall in Abbey Foregate or at the Guildhall in Frankwell Quay.

I was under the impression that there were no funds to carry out this kind of work. I keep being told by the council that this is the situation when I request them to look at lowering the limits on urban roads.

20 mph ?, you’ll have a job getting up to 20 mph in my experience in the town !.

This sounds a very good idea to me for the road mentioned.

Any speed faster than 20mhp on these roads is indeed dangerous.

    A common sense idea.

i find slow drivers annoying and dangerous and i think main roads and rural roads are over regulated peronsally for speed

BUT… all that said, beleive it or not, im quite supportative of this idea in residential areas

Other towns are *decreasing* their speeds. Trust Shrewsbury to buck the trend.

I thought the entire town centre was a 20mph
limit. Would anyone in their right mind drive at any where near 30 in town?

The people driving fast in these areas will continue to drive fast regardless of what the speed limit is, and the safe drivers would use commn senses and drive to suit the conditions. Exactly how are theses speed limits going to be enforced?? answer: they wont be!! So all in all the proposal is a waste of time!

I am amazed that in 12 years of living on Wyle Cop I have only seen one accident. The local joke is that the only safe way to cross the road is to leap in front of an ambulance!

No one is going to stick to it, 20mph is stupid it will just cause more congestion rather than accidents.
How is this going to be enforced when people don’t even stick to 30mph. For example Ellesmere Road in Shrewsbury from Coton Hill is 30mph but everyone does 40mph or 50mph further up past Herongate because if you go any slower it just builds traffic up.
This is not thought out well i’m afraid and Mr Wagner is just jumping on the band wagon so he can raise his profile nationally, no one really cars what he thinks…
