Cabbies urged to install CCTV in vehicles
Saturday 19th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Taxi firms across Shrewsbury are being encouraged to install CCTV in their cabs to reduce the risk of crime and disorder, it has been revealed.
Officials at Shropshire Council say since the new private hire and Hackney carriage licensing policies were introduced last month they have been ‘actively encouraging’ taxi drivers to equip their cabins with video monitoring facilities.
But they confirmed no provision had been made within this year’s budget to provide a blanket requirement across more than 600 Shrewsbury vehicles, although they failed to rule out the move in future.
Shropshire Council said it understood why drivers may want to install recording devices and it comes after Oxford City Council agreed for CCTV to be fitted to all 650 of its black cab and private hire taxis at a cost of £260,000. It has caused controversy with some, who claim the move breaches privacy laws despite footage only being accessed in the case of a police investigation.
