Trouble at a cage fighting event in Shrewsbury was caused by a ‘mindless few’, organisers said today.

Neil Woodhouse and Dougie Wildman said more than 1,000 people attended the show at Shrewsbury Sports Village and requests had been flooding in since for further shows in the town.

About 20 police officers were called to Saturday’s event after reports of disorder at the Cage Control event. Eyewitnesses described bottles and chairs being thrown.

Police licensing officer Tony Mantle said this week officers would be objecting to future shows in the town in light of the trouble.

But Mr Woodhouse said: “It is unfortunate that, as with most sporting events, the mindless few attempt to ruin the experience for those who wish to enjoy the sport.

“We would like to offer our assurances that security staff on hand dealt with the matter.

“No arrests were made, no injuries were reported and no complaints have been received.”

Mr Wildman said there had been a big increase in the popularity of the sport in Shrewsbury.

He said: “We are very proud of the show and its continued success in Shrewsbury.

“This show saw a giant leap forward on the promotion scale, with double our average spectator numbers, a professionally stacked fight card, and UFC style cage, fighter entrance, lighting and sound production. This has paid dividends, with a fantastic reaction from the fans.”

He added: “The show has been praised on social network sites and we are already being asked what our plans are for next year’s shows.

“Requests have poured in already, with enquiries as to where tickets can be purchased .

“We would like to host at least four further shows next year and continue to build on our success, alongside continuing to support local businesses.

“We currently employ a number of local people to work on the show and hope to continue to do so,” he continued.
