Letter: Questions on Telford cinema plans
Friday 18th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
With reference to the article concerning a new cinema at Telford Shopping Centre (Telford has not got a town centre). It appears that we could end up with two new cinemas.
We should ask the question, do we need two new cinemas?
Rob Cossey, representing Hark Group, says that the plan will boost the local economy.
We have borough towns within our area . . . how will the development boost their economy?
The Hark Group is only concerned with Telford Shopping Centre and does not care about the rest of Telford, and, apparently, Telford & Wrekin Council thinks the same.
Past Labour administrations have supported the idea that everything should go to Telford Shopping Centre.
Councillors were elected to represent the whole of the borough.
What has happened to the plans put forward by the previous administration which included Telford International Centre investing millions of pounds into the Southwater area?
The previous administration was looking into the proposal by Adrian Williams to engage the private sector to invest in providing a ‘Waterworld’ in Southwater, which would be a better project all round.
It looks like TIC and Waterworld have gone out of the window.
Now Telford & Wrekin Council and Labour are back in bed with the Hark Group, look out borough towns and the rest of Telford.

I personally think 2 cinemas is a waste of money.
Why not invest it in something more useful like tidying the Madeley Court Swimming Center?
90% of the changing rooms do not work lock, 90% of the lockers do not lock and the pool toys provided at parent toddler sessions, look like old dog toys!

Where do you think this money is coming from.
As if odeon or cineworld would invest in madeley court leisure centre. Do you not understand inward investment?

I thought Madeley Leisure Centre was closing anyway.Once the Abraham Darby Academy is completed, the Leisure Centre facilities will be based there. I may be wrong…

Both cineworld and odeon are private companies investing their own money. Surely they can choose wherever they want to invest it. As for the district centres, well Madeley has been vastly improved, there are plans underway for Dawley, Wellington and Hadley. We can’t always have everything. Also last time I checked the International Centre had just finished being extended with further related hotels and extensions in the medium term. Try a little patience.

Why 2 cinemas it would be nice to have a nice new THEATRE because Oakgates has had its day. There are a lot of people use the theatre. When we go to the theatre we hear a lot of people saying how uncomfortable it is.

So two cinemas will mean that Telford has a heart, are you joking.
It takes a variety of businesses and activities to make a centre, what a waste of money. All this will do is push up the price of tickets for the cinema as the single one is rarely half full.
Well done Telford and Wrekin, what happened to all the other outlets and especially the water world, people travel for miles to go to Stoke or Rhyl sun centre.
Are you too busy creating the co-operative council, to see what is happening outside your own door??

Vic Tonks, the Dawley Cllr who was thrown out of office in May because he divided Dawley. A Waterworld in the Town Centre would result in the closure of all the district swimming pools – all of which fail to keep their head above water (!) anyway.
Vic Tonks keeps talking about the tory adminstration – the one he supported which wanted a £40m council office!
Vic and Adrian do us all a favour – retire and do what Helen Williams as done – kept out of the paper!

No it won’t…have you ever been compared a Waterworld to a municipal swimming baths. Thats a bit like saying a cinema will get all the TV retail shops closed down..

How much was that council office ? Don’t believe your labour friends me thinks. As for a new public building which incidentally was originally a labour proposal guided and supported by council officers no less there is a clear argument to support the investment and employment in Telford. Renting a plethora of offices elsewhere and throughout the borough makes no real sense does it? Shame labour voters don’t understand governance isn’t it? How clever they are; by the way whats happening to the money from the sale of the old offices? Why be so bitter Heather? Just console yourself that Labour always leave a conservative government to look after us.

Oh Vic… “Past Labour administrations have supported the idea that everything should go to Telford Shopping Centre”
And the previous outgoing Tory one didn’t? the southwater development was started under them as well as the tendering for “PRIVATE” investment from private companys !!

Oh Ron ….past labour administrations nearly bankrupted all the local district centres with parking charges which is exactly what they shall do again if left unchallenged , open your eyes!
