Shropshire Council must make £9m extra savings
Thursday 17th November 2011, 10:57AM GMT.
Shropshire Council now needs to save £85 million by 2015 – about £9 million more than first thought, the authority has revealed.
The council had previously identified savings worth £40m this financial year and had planned to save a further £37 million by 2015. But a meeting of the council’s cabinet yesterday was told the figure needed to be saved over the next four years had been revised and an extra £9.5 million of savings was required.
The council said the increase was because of pressures such as inflation and higher energy costs.
Labour leader Alan Mosley said the news called into question the credibility of the authority’s projected figures.
He said the ‘error’ was something to be concerned about.
But cabinet leader Keith Barrow denied there had been an error. He said projected figures were always subject to change.
The council says it had made savings by cutting out waste and bureaucracy instead of cutting jobs.
It imposed a 2.7 per cent pay cut on October 1 and discussions are taking place over next year’s settlement. Councillors’ allowances were reduced by five per cent earlier this year.
