Empty buildings a draw for arsonists

Arsonists have been targeting empty buildings in a spate of attacks across Telford, police said today.

Police are now warning commercial property owners to be vigilant after attacks in Oakengates, St Georges, Donnington and Dawley. Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to each incident and are now offering advice on how to prevent their properties from becoming the next target.

Steve Loveridge, crime risk advisor for West Mercia Police, said: “Since the end of October there have been four arson attacks on empty commercial properties in the Oakengates, St Georges, Donnington and Dawley areas of Telford.

“Fortunately nobody was injured in any of the incidents but the potential for loss of life or serious injury is immense.

“We would urge property owners to reduce the risk of their buildings becoming a target to arsonists and thieves by following a few simple steps.

“These include securing the building doors and windows with appropriate metal boarding, removing valuables such as furniture to deter burglaries and theft, removing rubbish which will act like a magnet for fly tipping and a playground for youths, maintaining the building and fences, removing fly posters and painting over graffiti, fitting burglar alarms and external lighting and making regular visits to remove junk mail.”

He added: “Consider the disconnection of the utilities, ask any neighbours to act as your eyes and ears, supplying your details to the authorities to assist in the premises management, check for local authority grants to bring the building back in use and consider anti-climbing paint.”

For buildings which will be empty long term, he suggested removing valuable materials like lead, copper and wiring, removing stairs and locking internal doors to stop intruders having free access to the whole property and bricking up or securing doors and windows.
