Referendum on Newport housing plans
Wednesday 16th November 2011, 10:55AM GMT.
Thousands of residents could be heading to the polls in a referendum over plans for mass development in Newport.
Councillor Andrew Eade has called for a ballot to give residents a direct say on proposals for 1,000 houses and two supermarkets – the first of its kind in the borough.

Not a flippin chance of a referendum!!!
Telford and Wrekin don’t give a toss about Newport. Its a fairly affluant Town, there’s a low crime rate, there’s good Schools, and its the other side of Muxton, so outside of the Telford conurbation.
There is also the small matter of £22m that has been “entered” into Telford and Wrekins 2012 budget, for the sale of the land at Church Aston where 300+ houses, and a Sainsbury’s supermarket are to be built. So it is unbelievable to think that a referendum where Newport residents will soundly reject this housing plan, will ever happen. I applaud Mr Eade’s “call for a ballott”, but how long has he been a councillor, too long to know that it will never happen.

To be fair there is a militant group of roughly 300 people oppose the plans, with about 99% of the town either want a supermarket or plain dont care that the high street would loose a few hair dressers or charity shops.
My only wish would be that the supermarket was a Morrisons due to it being a large chain, doesn’t really do clothing, electricals and home stuffs to any great amount so wouldn’t affect the few shops in the town that actually bring people into the High Street.

So Newport Town Council have now refused the planning application for 300+ homes plus the Supermarket.
It now goes to Telford and Wrekin Council Planning board for approva/rejection
