Whittington Primary School arson attack

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.

A primary school near Oswestry was attacked by arsonists who set light to a pile of cardboard which had been left near the building to be saved for use in model-making classes.

Shocked staff arrived at Whittington Primary School, in Station Road, Whittington, to discover a door to the staffroom had been shattered and burnt, a window destroyed and a light melted by the heat of the flames.

The fire did not enter the school building and burnt itself out by the time it was discovered the next morning. The cost of the damage has been estimated between £500 and £700.

Headteacher Sean Sibley said when he called the police they had to double check they had the right school because it is normally trouble free.

Mr Sibley said he thought the cause of the fire was some cardboard behind the school, saved for model-making, being set alight.

He said: “We have to look on the positive side, we are very lucky the fire didn’t get into the building. If the fire had got into the staffroom there are lots of files there.”

Richard Ewels, for West Mercia Police, said: “It happened between 6pm on November 8 and 8am on November 9 when a quantity of cardboard left in the porch area at the back of the school was set alight.

“The heat caused damage to the door and window amounting to around £500.

“It is being treated as arson.”

Mr Ewels asked witnesses to call Oswestry Police Station on the 101 number or anonymously via Crimestoppers line on 080055511.
