Welshpool one-way system could be ‘tweaked’

Welshpool’s controversial one-way system could be ‘tweaked’ after fears were raised over the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the chairman of a committee looking into it has said.

Powys County Council is reviewing the town’s one-way system, which was opened in February to criticism from drivers and traders.

The authority has appointed a committee, led by Councillor David Jones, to carry out a full review of the one-way system.

Councillor Jones said the review was taking positive steps forward and he hoped to make a recommendation on what changes needed to be made to the system, over the next few months. And he added that the possibility of completely changing the system had not been ruled out.

“We will be asking ourselves whether we need to tweak the existing system, but unfortunately it will all come down to who pays for it to be done,” he said.

“I’ve received many complaints about the current system with many people concerned that there will be a serious accident if changes are not made soon.”

He added: “I am not convinced it is the best system for Welshpool and I believe it’s causing a lot of problems.”

He said he hoped to come up with a recommendation for the council’s cabinet within the next few months.

The system falls down mainly on the traffic lights and the fact that ALL traffic from the north and east must go through that junction. Please make brook street 2 way so that those thousands of people passing through to the west do not need to jostle dangerously for the right to wait at the lights before pushing past badly parked cars and pedestrians in the main shopping street just to get to the Raven roundabout. This must be a very bad example to all drivers of road planning that could have been so easily foreseen.

Turn the whole thing on its head – send everything the opposite way! It may sound crazy but might be more flexible for everyone. Alternatively scrap the whole thing, summer and easter were chaos and businesses in the area are suffering.
