Shropshire Council probes fraud claims against staff

Shropshire Council is investigating a number of allegations of fraud among its staff, it has been revealed.

The matter came to light following a meeting of the authority’s audit committee which looked at its current strategy to deal with claims of fraud, bribery and corruption.

Bosses say that the council has a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to dealing with such matters, while a spokeswoman for the authority said it was looking at ‘less than 10’ cases. A report to the committee said: “In recent years the council has experienced a relatively low level of detected fraudulent and corrupt activity.

“Where such activity has been identified, prompt action has been taken to investigate and seek sanctions and redress.

“The protection of the public’s assets is core to everything we do.”

Councillor Brian Williams, chairman of the audit committee, said: “The Counter Fraud, Bribery and Anti-Corruption Strategy continues to clearly outline the council’s commitment to stand against all forms of fraud, bribery and corruption.

“The council has always set itself high standards for both members and officers in the operation and administration of the council’s affairs and has always dealt promptly with any allegations or suspicions of fraud and corruption.

“The council takes the most serious attitude possible towards fraud, bribery and corruption.”

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Williams admitted it was a growing issue, which he put down to the current harsh financial times.

But after the meeting he said the figure of fewer than 10 was still a very low number when set against the thousands of staff working for the council.
