A service to celebrate the life of horse trainer Donald ‘Ginger’ McCain was due to be held in Liverpool today.

The trainer of the legendary three-times Grand National winner Red Rum died on September 19 at the age of 80.

The service at Liverpool Cathedral has been organised for 2.30pm and is just a few miles from the Aintree venue where he enjoyed his finest hours.

His son, Donald junior, who took over the training licence at Cholmondeley, north of Whitchurch in 2006, sent out Ballabriggs to win this year’s Grand National.

Mr McCain was a former national serviceman in the RAF. He married Beryl Harris in March 1961 and the couple had two children, Joanne and Donald junior.

Aintree spokeswoman Emma Owen said: “We’re remembering Ginger at a service at Liverpool Cathedral and everyone is welcome to attend.”
