Driver dies as his car hits tree

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.

A driver died when his car crashed into a tree after veering off a notorious stretch of road near Gnosall.

The tragedy happened on the A518 between Haughton and Stafford yesterday and prompted more calls for the road to be made safer.

The victim has not yet been named by police. He was driving a Ford Focus towards Haughton and was about half a mile from the junction with Bradley Lane when the car left the road at about 1.20pm. No other vehicle was involved.

An ambulance, rapid response vehicle, a senior paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance attended the scene.

A section of the road was closed in both directions until about 3.30pm.

Councillor Barry Stamp, a founder member of the A518 Action Group, said it was the third fatal accident on the road between Gnosall and Stafford in 18 months.
