Oswestry late-night shopping bonanza bid
Monday 14th November 2011, 7:00PM GMT.
Every trader in Oswestry town centre is being urged to stay open later on Friday evenings next month in a bid to create a festive retail bonanza.
The town’s chamber of commerce has written to businesses asking them to join in with the late-night opening scheme to boost trade. Chamber bosses say traders have the chance to capitalise on an agreement to provide free parking on Friday evenings in December.
The chamber has secured free parking from 5pm every Friday throughout December in the town council-run car parks.
And the town council has also agreed to allow free parking from 2pm daily from December 19 to Christmas Eve.
Chamber chiefs say they want as many traders as possible to benefit from the parking arrangements.
The group’s chairman Martin Anderson said: “The chamber is keen to promote Oswestry as the place to do Christmas shopping, and have been consulting with members and working with the town council in recent weeks to bring this about.
“We are writing in the hope that we can gain momentum with late night opening by encouraging as many shops and traders to stay open as possible.
“The chamber has recently discussed late night shopping to collectively find a preferred night with traders in the town. Chamber members have chosen to open their shops on all the Fridays in December.
“The intention is to stay open until 8pm. We hope that all participating shops will promote this and the chamber intends to publicise this and will be distributing flyers around town.
“The first, December 2, coincides with the Christmas light switch-on.”
Mr Anderson added many chamber members had expressed a desire to open their shops on Sundays, and he hoped other shops would follow suit.
