Police’s pension cash gift to Shrewsbury victim

A 74-year-old Shrewsbury pensioner whose savings were stolen by a pickpocket at a town supermarket has had the money replaced by police.
The woman’s purse, containing £235, was stolen from her body warmer while she was in Morrisons on October 28. The empty purse was found in the car park.
Constable Chris Baldwin said the woman, who does not want to be identified, had been very upset.
“I decided to apply for a donation from the West Mercia Police Community Fund and the trustees decided to cover the full amount,” said the officer.
“The money came from her pension and had been drawn out that morning. I believe she had been saving to go on holiday with a friend.
“Needless to say, she was absolutely delighted and extremely grateful to have the money replaced.”
The fund is made up of contributions from West Mercia personnel and proceeds from the sale of seized property.
