New £150m Shrewsbury retail centre may include GP practice

Friday 11th November 2011, 2:46PM GMT.

Plans for a £150 million shopping centre in Shrewsbury could include a medical practice, have been revealed. The centre would link up the town’s current three malls.

The Riverside Medical Practice in Smithfield Road, which has about 11,500 patients, is due to be knocked down in 18 months.

It will make way for the proposed New Riverside shopping centre, which would link three malls into one giant complex.

But at a public meeting last night it was revealed that the plans could include a replacement town centre medical service, although it is not known where this would be created.

Developers are due to lodge an application for the shopping centre proposals to Shropshire Council soon.

Councillor Mal Price, from the council, told last night’s meeting of the Shrewsbury Local Joint Committee at the Guildhall, talks about the planning application were under way.

He said: “Without saying too much the planning application is imminent. There have been discussions involving the medical practice.”

He said there had been previous plans by the Shropshire County Primary Care Trust to relocate the medical practice to Barker Street, but they had not come to fruition.

Earlier in the meeting, Councillor Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury Town Council, urged members of the public to register their opposition to the site unless it specifically included provisions for a replacement to the surgery.
