Land sale pledge on Ellesmere medical centre site
Friday 11th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Land earmarked for Ellesmere’s medical centre will never be sold, councillors have vowed.
Ellesmere Patients’ Group feared Shropshire Council may sell the land at the Wharf before Shropshire Primary Care Trust gives the go-ahead for a new medical centre on the site.
But councillors have revealed the land has been ring-fenced to ensure it cannot be sold off.
Councillors Steve Davenport and Ann Hartley said the land had been secured by North Shropshire District Council before the demise of the authority.
“North Shropshire District Council procured that piece of land to ensure it would be kept, in perpetuity for the people of Ellesmere,” Councillor Hartley said. “Shropshire Council cannot sell that land.”
Councillor Davenport said the cost of the land had been more than £1 million.
Currently the land is being used as a temporary car park for traders.
