Greek Orthodox Youth official criticises arsonists
Friday 11th November 2011, 12:00AM GMT.
A high ranking church official today condemned arsonists who targeted a youth campsite in south Shropshire.
Arsonists set fire to sheds containing marquees, tents and cooking equipment in Church Preen on Sunday morning. The Greek Orthodox Youth of Great Britain Camp organisers estimated £40,000 of damage had been caused.
A statement from the office of Greek Orthodox Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain said today: “The camp is run for 10 days in the summer and is attended by children from a great mixture of backgrounds and races.
“These include Greeks, English, Romanians, Russians, Bulgarians, and Georgians. The camp has hitherto been highly successful and valued by all the participants.
“The motive for the attack is unknown but it has been suggested that it may be linked to a planning application the Archdiocese has submitted for a permanent store and lavatory block, but it has also been suggested that the motive may be racist.”
