Bridgnorth cancer screen day breaks the records
Thursday 10th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Hundreds of men queued in Bridgnorth to be tested for prostate cancer as the town broke the record for the largest turnout at a UK screening for the disease.
Nearly 600 men packed out Castle Hall in the town to be tested for the most common male cancer in the country, and organisers today said the turnout was the greatest in the country for such a screening.
One man had promised to donate £1,000 to the Lions Club, which organises the screenings in the town, if someone was discovered with the disease, but shocked organisers when he handed over a cheque for £2,000 instead.
Lions Club committee member Clive Davies said a total of 581 men turned out for the most recent event on October 31.
Previous screenings in 2009 and 2010 revealed more than 30 men in the town had prostate cancer or other complications.
The 2009 screening saw 270 men tested, while last year that figure rose to 370.
