130 jobs to be axed at Shrewsbury barracks

More than 130 jobs will be lost when the Ministry of Defence closes its divisional Army headquarters at Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury in April 2012, it was confirmed today.

The barracks is the home of the 5th Division, which has 63 civilian and 71 military posts, all of which will be lost. Copthorne Barracks is the base for the Army’s senior managers covering from Wales to Norfolk.

It will be disbanded on April 2 along with several regional headquarters as part of the Ministry of Defence’s plans to create a smaller force.

Its work will be taken over by a new HQ in Aldershot. Workers not found new jobs will be offered the chance of redeployment.

An MoD spokesman said 12 posts would be created at 143 (West Midlands) Brigade, also based at Copthorne, which will be otherwise unaffected by the change.

Rubbish. I worked in the public sector for 22 years. I paid a fortune into a pension fund and ha ha retired at 47.

You couldn’t have retired on much after 22 years and also you couldn’t have taken your pension at 47. Don’t be misleading. If you have stopped working, that is different to retiring in the true sense of the word.

Sour grapes again blue boy – if you’d bothered going to school you could have probably got a job in the public sector…

This is REALLY bad news for the area, they will turn it into posh flats which we dont need with the loss of jobs and people buying in local shops which we do need.
