West Mercia Police launch new 101 non-emergency number
Tuesday 8th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Police today launched a new phone number for people to call with non-emergencies.
More than 40 Chief Constables across England and Wales, including West Mercia’s, have signed up to new number to make it easier for police to deal with non-emergencies.
Officers have said 101 should be easier for people to remember instead of its 0300 3333000 number.
It follows figures released by West Mercia Police which show from January to October this year the force’s 999 switchboard received more than 94,000 calls – but nearly 70,000 of those were non-emergencies.
Some of the calls included people asking for directions and one woman complaining of a spider in her bath.
Chief Superintendent Trevor Albutt, from West Mercia, said 101 should be used if a car has been stolen, if property has been damaged, when drug use or dealing was suspected or when reporting a minor traffic collision.
“999 is there for emergencies if someone’s life is at risk,” he said.
